"A's" are wonderful things. Not only being the first letter of the alphabet and a prominent one, they also denote a high grade in school. A's are usually equivalent to outstanding, just not quite superb as a A+.
I just got my first college level English paper back tonight. When I wrote this paper I thought I did a really good job. Tonight when the teacher said only two people got A's and nine A-'s, I started getting worried that I hadn't received a good grade. She also has a rule that no one is to share their grades in class, so no one complains about "unfair" grading, so know one knew who got the two A's. By chance my paper was the last to be handed out, with my anxiety and excitement mounting. Lo and behold! I got an A. I was so happy. I didn't want to sit through the rest of the class. As this is my first college paper, and it is an A paper, here it is for others to see.
An Ignored Masterpiece.
By the time the sunsets and night falls many of us are too busy or tired that we don’t stop and look around at the natural world, and few of us take the time during the day just to study nature. We all have our reasons. Some people are so bogged down with work and their lives that they only notice nature on the rare occasions. They only notice when it affects them like a bad storm, or a skunk. Others are always unhappy with nature. The weather isn’t right, or there are too many animals and their making a mess, or the landscape isn’t right. They don’t see how all these things fit into a beautiful pattern, everything working together in an endless circle. Then there are those who work with nature, who strive to understand the ways of animals, plants, and the elements of the weather and land. Some of these people are misunderstood and are considered fanatics about their work. But they keep going, following their heart and facing all odds to teach the world about nature. Most others rush past wondrous sunsets or spend glorious days cooped up inside on the computer. These people spend a lot of time outside, no matter the weather. The others miss all that makes this world bearable, the natural world around us, giving us small glimpses of what heaven will be like. I like to think that I am one of those striving to understand the natural world and teach others about it. Maybe by this example of nature’s beauty I will get others to slow down and see, and understand, the ignored masterpieces of this world.
As I came out of English class last Wednesday, after a long day of classes, I chanced to stop at the top of the hill at the edge of campus. My tired spirits were immediately lifted, like after a good night’s sleep or a soothing shower. I sat there on my bike for awhile just absorbing the beauty of the sky. It was like no other sunset I’ve seen and I hope there are many who saw it and appreciated its beauty. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, that may be so, but a thousand words or a picture do not seem adequate to describe and preserve the beauty that I saw. As words are the only way to share what I saw with others, since I didn’t get a picture, they will have to do. Maybe by doing so, I will show others what they miss when they don’t stop and look around, and possibly inspire someone to view nature with an artist’s eye.
The Sun is a key element in the life of this planet and all that lives on it. It gives us light, heat, and when it rises and sets it gives us a glimpse of God and his power and glory. Sitting at the top of the hill on the edge of campus you can see what seems to be for miles in all directions. It is a great place to watch as the day passes and the seasons change. It is a place to find peace as you watch the Sunset and night fall. I did just that last Wednesday. As I sat their enjoying God’s heavenly masterpiece I could hear in the background people rushing to and fro never stopping to look at this glorious part of the natural world. They missed one of the greatest shows on earth. Looking to the left was a variegated cloudy blue sky. Several shades of blue, from indigo to baby blue, blended together; falling and rising like a stream of water. A cool breeze was blowing bringing with it a hint of winter. The blue sky and the cool breeze wafting in exuded a feeling of peace and quiet. The blue sky blended with and ended in a symphony of fiery colors. Ribbons of red, yellow, orange, and pink danced above the edge of the horizon like many notes in a song. The sun was a perfect orange sphere sitting just above the horizon, and as it sank over the horizon the bright colors of the sunset mellowed out and were consumed by the calming blue of the ever approaching night sky, floating in on the breeze. As I turned away to go down the hill to my room, I kept with me the feeling of beauty and peace. I felt sorry for those who failed to see the beauty in this sunset.
When anyone buries themselves in their lives, in their work, they miss so much that goes by each day. If a person makes the time each day to stop, take a breath, and look around, they could be surprised by what they may see. When a person finds something they’re really interested in, for example rocks or flowers, they can do some research to learn more about and to fully appreciate the object. Some may find that their life and job are easier when they have taken the time to appreciate nature’s beauty. Just watching a sunset and drinking in its beauty will refresh a person and help them prepare for the next day. We can make life much better for everyone if we stop ignoring the masterpieces of nature.
I did not fix any of the minor punctuation errors. Enjoy.
